1. Course The direction in which the boat is traveling or intends to travel.
2. Magnetic DeviationThis is the amount of compass error used to correct for a course. This is affected by metal or magnetic objects placed near a compass.
3. Minutes There are sixty of these in a degree.
4. Compass An instrument that uses the earth's magnetic field to point to the direction of the magnetic north pole.
5. Degrees A compass is divided into 360 of these.
6. Bearing The direction of an object from an observer.
7. True North Geographic north or toward the North Pole.
8. Magnetic BearingA bearing taken by a compass.
9. Compass Rose A circle on a chart indicating the direction of geographic north and usually the magnetic variance between that and magnetic north.
10. Heading The actual course of the vessel at any given time.
11. True Course This is the line that you want to follow on the map.
12. Magnetic CourseThe course with respect to magnetic north. This is the course that a compass would show if there was no compass error or deviation.
13. Compass CourseThis is the course that would be read on a compass after correction for magnetic deviation has been made. It is the course you want to follow on a compass to maintain a correct heading or true course.
14. Magnetic North The direction the needle of the compass points to. This direction is based on the magnetic fields of the earth and is not the same as true north.
15. Seconds There are sixty of these in a minute.
